Detection of a transit by the planetary companion of HD 80606 Stephen

چکیده
We report the detection of a transit egress by the ∼ 3.9-Jupiter-mass planet HD 80606b, an object in a highly-eccentric orbit (e ∼ 0.93) about its parent star of approximately solar type. The astrophysical reality of the signal of variability in HD 80606 is confirmed by observation with two independent telescope systems, and checks against several reference stars in the field. Differential photometry with respect to the nearby comparison star HD 80607 provides a precise light curve. Modelling of the light curve with a full eccentric-orbit model indicates a planet/star-radius ratio of 0.1057±0.0018, corresponding to a planet radius of 1.029RJ for a solar-radius parent star; and a precise orbital inclination of 89.285◦±0.023◦, giving a total transit duration of 12.1±0.4 hours. The planet hence joins HD 17156b in a class of highly eccentric transiting planets, in which HD 80606b has both the longest period and most eccentric orbit. The recently reported discovery of a secondary eclipse of HD 80606b by the Spitzer Space Observatory permits a combined analysis with the mid-time of primary transit in which the orbital parameters of the system can be tightly constrained. We derive a transit ephemeris of Ttr = HJD(2454876.344± 0.011) + (111.4277± 0.0032)× E.

THE TRANSIT INGRESS AND THE TILTED ORBIT OF THE EXTRAORDINARILY ECCENTRIC EXOPLANET HD 80606b
We present the results of a transcontinental campaign to observe the 2009 June 5 transit of the exoplanet HD 80606b. We report the first detection of the transit ingress, revealing the transit duration to be 11.64± 0.25 hr and allowing more robust determinations of the system parameters. Keck spectra obtained at midtransit exhibit an anomalous blueshift, giving definitive evidence that the stel...
متن کاملDistinguishing between stellar and planetary companionswith phase monitoring
Exoplanets which are detected using the radial velocity technique have a well-known ambiguity of their true mass, caused by the unknown inclination of the planetary orbit with respect to the plane of the sky. Constraints on the inclination are aided by astrometric follow-up in rare cases or, in ideal situations, through subsequent detection of a planetary transit. As the predicted inclination d...
متن کاملRadio Observations of HD 80606 Near Planetary Periastron
This paper reports Very Large Array observations at 325 and 1425 MHz (λ90cm and λ20cm) during and near the periastron passage of HD 80606b on HJD 2454424.86 (2007 November 20). We obtain flux density limits (3σ) of 1.7 mJy and 48 μJy at 325 and 1425 MHz, respectively, equivalent to planetary luminosity limits of 2.3 × 10 erg s and 2.7 × 10 erg s. Unfortunately, these are several orders of magni...
متن کاملHD 80606 b , a planet on an extremely elongated orbit ⋆
We report the detection of a planetary companion orbiting the solar-type star HD80606, the brighter component of a wide binary with a projected separation of about 2000 AU. Using high-signal spectroscopic observations of the two components of the visual binary, we show that they are nearly identical. The planet has an orbital period of 111.8 days and a minimum mass of 3.9 MJup. With e =0.927, t...
متن کاملMulticolor Observations of a Planetary Transit of Hd 209458
We present BV RIZ photometric observations of HD 209458 during the transit by its planetary companion on UT 1999 November 15 with the University of Hawaii 0.6m and 2.2m telescopes and the High Altitude Observatory STARE telescope. The detailed shape of the transit curve is predicted to vary with color due primarily to the color-dependent limb-darkening of the star, but potentially due as well t...
